Over the course of my musical career, I developed a love for electronic music and MIDI instruments. Electronic music making erased the limitations I felt as a classically trained flutist. As a woodwind player, I fell in love with Akai’s Electronic Wind Instrument. But the more I played it, the more I wanted one that provided a similar playing experience to the instrument I specialized in.
I brainstormed the design and functionality of my ideal MIDI flute. Having no prior experience with Arduino, breath sensors, soldering, electronics design, or 3D printing, this project has been an exciting and challenging experience.
Modeling my instrument after a variation on the MIDILodica, my MIDI flute is currently in stage one of production, using PVC pipes in lieu of the ideal 3D printed body. My first goal is to have a working prototype, however far from my ideal vision it ends up.
